Georges-Pierre Seurat A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–1886)

During the 19th century, scientist-writers wrote treatises on color, optical effects and perception.Seurat theorized that the scientific application of color was like any other natural law, and he was driven to prove this conjecture. He thought that the knowledge of perception and optical laws could be used to create a new language of art based on its own set of heuristics and he set out to show this language using lines, color intensity and color schema. Seurat called this language Chromoluminarism. (excerpt taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Seurat). Seurat was definitely not the first person to combine the visual arts, with the visual sciences, but he is one of the most prominent people to do so recently. This became one of our favorite paintings the minute we learned its made up of dots, in a style called pointalism, with a play between the colors of red, and green to create a sense of motion.

Sankofa is depicted as this heart shaped symbol, or as this bird with its head facing its tail. In Ma'at Fashion we look back at the past of an ancient civilization known as Kemet, or Kingdom Kush, or in other terms, ancient egypt. We recreate off of the hieroglyphical art, culture, and concepts to create a fashion house with that as the inspirational foundation. In addition we incorporate art, and fashion styles from the cultures of now in America, Europe, and Japan. So it can be said that we go back to the past to create the future, or Back to the future. Sankofa is term that interlocks our overall theme well into one word. It is a west african word, from the Akan language. It literally translates into, "se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenki." Or in english to"it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot".

An Hermès scarf is for life and for living. The idea behind this simple project was born of the desire of Hermes’ artistic director of silk, Bali Barret, to document the fervour around that traditional silk square of which the Hermès ‘carré’ is the ultimate expression. British photographer, Matt Irwin, travelled to 4 capitals, to create a fanzine with art director, Dean Langley and stylist, Francesca Burns around 4 girls and their lives and loves – friends, lovers, places, and of course, their scarves. The Dresden Codex is one of only a few examples of Maya Calligraphy to escape the destruction of the Spanish Conquistadors and survive to the present day. Looking at a lot of the Mayan scripts, plus their pyramidal works, its very apparent they had contact with the ancient Egyptians, but may skipped a few lessons, as they involved in human sacrificing a lot in their spiritual practices.
